Course Description

As a studio of 26 designers from around the world, students collectively designed the Global Food Expo 2017 which will take place at the former Mattatoio al Testaccio slaughterhouse/Mount Testaccio. This design builds on students’ pop-up restaurant designs. Food City analyses of Venice and Rome through markets and cafes linked to the urban fabric and global exhibition architecture at the Venice Biennale. Students’ exhibition design should be “radical, experimental solutions,” a “laboratory” for interactive displays and direct partaking in global food culture. The designs will be within the Mattatoio complex, but may be a freestanding exterior structure, a building attached to another structure, or a building within a building, and engage the physical/historical context through a visionary architectural intervention/design that intersects with the food, the culture, and the context of the Mattatoio.
