Course Description

Pop-Urbanism Berlin: Design Strategies of Temporality will develop incremental design practices as suggested in concepts of the Spontaneous City or the Instant City. These practices are based on the bottom up, participatory, and networking practices of Berlin’s creative industries, its music, art, and design scenes, as well as of its immigrant and homeless populations. Compared to current forms of sustainable design such as Green and Ecological Urbanism, these approaches allow conceiving of urban design as experimental and open ended.

It will be the studio’s goal to develop strategies which use urban design as agency encouraging temporal, interactive, and processual forms of spatial appropriation. Design solutions can range from informal interventions fostering the development of subcultures to high end projects.
