Course Description

This studio is a real-life design challenge to research, envision and present an integrated proposal for a new Welcome & Event Center at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratory (FHL) site on San Juan Island. Located on 500 acres of mostly forested shoreline, the Friday Harbor Lab is one of the most important marine research facilities in the world. Working with input from the FHL director, staff and researchers, students were tasked with integrating three diverse programmatic elements in a single facility that nestles into this rich landscape and complements the existing buildings of the FHL campus. Focus was on efficient and inspiring design that is technically developed and clearly presented. All aspects of the building will be addressed including: site-planning, spatial development, structural and material resolution, mechanical, acoustical and lighting integration and energy efficiency.
