Course Description

As of May 31, 2017, there were over 11,600 homeless in King County. The Union Gospel Mission in Pioneer Square provides food, shelter, and counseling for some of these people in Pioneer Square. In response to the homelessness crisis, the Mission, a leader in progressive help for the homeless, needs to expand. This studio focused on the design of additions to and renovations of the Union Gospel Mission’s building. The design challenge is to make something work better. Adaptation demands a sort of architectural surgery, a bricoleur’s ingenuity, along with social and environmental awareness.
