Center for Integrated Design

IDL Interior

The University of Washington Center for Integrated Design includes the Integrated Design Lab (IDL), the Discovery Commons, and the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF). The Center’s mission is to advance the highest performing built environment that better serves environmental and human health through research, technical assistance, education and outreach. Operating out of its own ‘living laboratory’, the Center is a self-sustaining service located at the Bullitt Center in Seattle, WA– the greenest commercial building in the world.

The Center is anchored by the Integrated Design Lab, which delivers its mission through three core services:

  • Discovery through Research –  The Integrated Design Lab conducts research in the area of integrated design practice and methods, new technologies, and strategies to advance knowledge that supports the healthiest and highest performing buildings and cities. Using real-world building performance data and advanced simulation and analytical methods, the lab seeks to influence industry to radically improve the design and operation performance of buildings.
  • Guidance through Technical Assistance – The Integrated Design Lab puts its research findings into practice by providing technical assistance to leading building industry partners. As technical advisors to design teams across North America, the IDL provides guidance through its advanced modeling and monitoring capabilities in building energy use, integrated design thinking, integrated lighting, daylighting, heating, passive systems, ventilating and air conditioning systems.
  • Advocacy through Education and Outreach  – The Discovery Commons connects the IDL’s knowledge, gleaned from research and technical assistance projects, to the building industry and public by providing educational programs, classes, workshops, focus-group meetings, leadership forums, Bullitt Center Tours, and exhibits of breakthrough technologies.

The Center and the Integrated Design Lab are supported by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA), the U.S. Department of Energy (US DOE), The National Science Foundation (NSF), The UW Campus Sustainability Fund, Puget Sound Energy, AIA Seattle, The Bullitt Foundation, and innovative building owners, designers, and operators in the Pacific Northwest region and nationally.

The Center’s research and technical assistance activities are carried out by interdisciplinary faculty, staff, students, professional collaborators and partner organizations.
