Concurrent M.Arch + MLA
The concurrent Master of Architecture (M.Arch) and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) degree program integrates the design of buildings and landscapes with the ecological, social and cultural factors that shape the built environment.
The program brings together shared interests of the Departments of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, including:
- place-making and cultural context
- historic preservation
- integrated design
- urban context and urban design
- sustainable and environmentally responsible design
Students develop expertise across both disciplines while learning to address complex local and global challenges through interdisciplinary practice, collaboration and leadership.
Program Structure
The concurrent degree provides a structured pathway for incoming and current M.Arch and MLA students to study both disciplines in a rigorous and efficient way.
Students engage with faculty, studios and coursework across both programs, strengthening their understanding of the relationships among buildings, landscapes, infrastructure, ecology and urban systems.
Preparatory Coursework
The length and sequence of the program depend on a student’s previous academic preparation.
Students who do not already hold the relevant undergraduate preparation in architecture and/or landscape architecture may complete one to two years of preparatory coursework before entering the shared concurrent-degree sequence.
- Architecture preparation may include design fundamentals, architectural representation, history, construction, structures and environmental systems.
- Landscape Architecture preparation may include urban and ecological design, site design, representation and history.
Concurrent Degree Sequence
Once students enter the shared degree sequence:
- Year One is primarily focused on the core studios and required coursework of the Architecture program.
- Year Two focuses on parallel core coursework in Landscape Architecture.
- Advanced study brings the two disciplines together through electives, interdisciplinary work and thesis preparation.
- The program culminates in a thesis sequence spanning the final stages of the degree.

Professional Licensure
The M.Arch is a NAAB-accredited professional degree in architecture. Becoming a licensed architect also requires professional experience and completion of the required licensing examination.
The concurrent program is designed to support students pursuing professional preparation across both architecture and landscape architecture.
