Project Description
Developed through the Nehemiah Interdisciplinary Studio, Raising Roofs explores how design can support the “Highest and Best Beloved Community” by addressing housing insecurity and displacement in Seattle’s Othello neighborhood. The project envisions church-owned property as an opportunity for affordable housing, sustainable income, and strengthened community ties. In response to rapid gentrification, the proposal creates a “neighborhood within a neighborhood,” where housing, gathering spaces, and local programming work together to reinforce stability and belonging.

The development scenario brings together Holly Park Community Church, Maranatha Adventist Church, Iglesia Ni Cristo Church, and First Samoan Congregational Christian Church in a shared vision for equitable growth. New worship and fellowship spaces are integrated with affordable housing and flexible areas for education, events, and community services. Courtyards, pedestrian connections, and shared outdoor spaces encourage interaction between residents, congregations, and neighbors, creating a layered environment rooted in care and collaboration. By centering existing communities and cultural networks, Raising Roofs demonstrates how faith-based institutions can play a powerful role in shaping inclusive and resilient urban futures.
