The Washington State Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation (DAHP) has named Professor Jeffrey Karl Ochsner, FAIA, a recipient of a 2026 State Historic Preservation Officer’s Career Achievement Award. The award recognizes nearly four decades of teaching, scholarship and mentorship in architecture and historic preservation.
Ochsner joined the University of Washington College of Built Environments in 1988. Since then he has introduced generations of students to architectural history, preservation and urban design. His research on the architecture of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, including his work as editor of Shaping Seattle Architecture, has made an important contribution to how the region understands its built history.
DAHP also pointed to the reach of his teaching. His former students have become architects, planners, preservation professionals, public officials and community leaders, carrying his influence across Washington and beyond.
Ochsner is being honored alongside this year’s other recipients at the annual PLACES Conference in Ellensburg on October 6. The Washington State Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation has the full list of 2026 awardees.
