Undergraduate Architectural Design Application

Applications must be submitted by Monday, March 28, 2022, 4:00 PM PST

Digital Portfolio Requirements

  • Required file format:  PDF – hardcopy portfolios will not be accepted.  Portfolios should be designed and formatted for on-screen viewing.
  • Please label your pdf file in the following way: last name_first name_ArchDesign_Portfolio_2022
  • Maximum number of pages of design work (not including transcripts, resume and essay):  24 – 8.5”x11” pages
  • OR 12 – 11”x17” pages
  • Maximum file size: 30MB

The portfolio helps reviewers determine your potential to perform successfully in a studio-based design curriculum. Your portfolio is a design project – all of its parts should work together to make a complete and satisfying whole. It is a good idea to plan the layout of each page so that it contributes to a graphic sensibility that is consistent from beginning to end.

  1. Cover Page (include your name as it appears on MyUW)
  2. Transcripts of all college-level work. Official or unofficial transcripts are accepted. (Winter quarter grades should be included)
  3. Degree Audit Report (DARS for Architectural Design major)
  4. Composition of ONE of the two following essay questions in approximately 500-750 words (single spaced). Use your choice of either of the questions to help direct and compose a narrative that addresses the general question and helps the committee understand your interest and motivation in applying to the architectural design major.
    • Essay Question #1: “Describe a place or building you have visited, worked in, or lived that has inspired your interest in architecture, and explain why.”
    • Essay Question #2: “Describe a place or building that you have read about or studied and explain how and why it inspired your interest in architecture.”
  5. Personal Resume – A typewritten summary of your education, employment history, recreational interests, hobbies, skills, travel, and personal interests.
  6. Portfolio of Creative Work-This important part of the application process illustrates your ability to draw, communicate and represent ideas creatively. Please see the portfolio examples in Gould Hall 208 in the Department of Architecture or attend one of our workshops for more information.
