Admissions

UNDERGRADUATE

The Department of Architecture offers two different options for undergraduate students interested in studying architecture: Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Design and Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Design is a pre-professional degree that prepares students for graduate study in a Master of Architecture professional program, a requirement for a career as a licensed architect. Admission is offered at the junior level through a competitive application process, based on completing two years of general university requirements and program pre-requisites.

The Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies is a liberal studies degree that combines a liberal arts philosophy with general studies in architecture; architecture and design form a framework for exploring culture and society—past, present, and future. Admission is offered at a freshman or junior level, with the program preparing students for graduate education and careers in architecture and design disciplines, architectural technology, or related disciplines in the built environment. This program is a good choice for students interested in a minor or a double major because it offers some flexibility in the curriculum while still providing a sound basis for students interested in professional programs in architecture at the graduate level.

GRADUATE

Master of Architecture

There are two distinct entry points into our professionally accredited Master of Architecture degree program. Candidates holding a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than architecture pursue a 3 year Master of Architecture. Candidates with a pre-professional BS or BA in Architecture or Environmental Design pursue a 2 year Master of Architecture. Both of these programs are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and educate students to become registered, licensed architects. Also available is a M Arch – MLA concurrent degree.

Master of Science in Architecture

The Master of Science (MS) in Architecture includes concentrations in Design Computing and History and Theory.

The MS in Architecture in Design Technology program provides the opportunity for architects, engineers, and other qualified individuals to pursue advance research on topics that include design computing, building performance simulation, sustainable systems and design, high-performance buildings, materials and fabrication, structural analysis, life cycle analysis, food-water-energy nexus, and other related topics.

The MS in Architecture in History and Theory provides the opportunity for architects, recent architecture graduates and other qualified individuals to pursue advanced research on the history and theory of architecture applying a variety of historical and critical lenses.
