Robert Hutchison Appointed Gensler Visiting Critic at Cornell University

The Department of Architecture congratulates Robert Hutchison, Affiliate Associate Professor and Principal of Robert Hutchison Architecture, on his appointment as the Fall 2025 Gensler Visiting Critic at Cornell University’s Department of Architecture.

Cornell AAP recently announced Hutchison among its new faculty members contributing to the advancement of interdisciplinary expertise: Advancing the Mission: New Faculty Continue Expanding Expertise Across Disciplines.

As part of his appointment, Hutchison will deliver a lecture at Cornell on Thursday, September 4, titled “Unbuilt/Unconscious”: Lecture details.

 

 

 

In addition to his new role at Cornell, Hutchison continues to balance an active design and teaching practice.  He is a practitioner, researcher, and educator whose interests and practice overlap the fields of architecture, art and photography. Hutchison is Principal of the Seattle-based architecture studio Robert Hutchison Architecture, and an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington, where he teaches architectural design studios at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He is the recipient of the 2017 Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, the 2010 and 2021 Japan/US Friendship Creative Artists Fellowship, and the 2009 Emerging Voices awarded by The Architectural League of NY, and has been awarded residencies at Bogliasco, Loghaven, and MacDowell. Hutchison received a MArch degree from the University of Washington in 1996, and BS de-grees in Structural Engineering and Architectural Engineering from Drexel University in 1990. Hutchison is the 2025 Cornell AAP Gensler Visiting Critic.

At the University of Washington, Hutchison has taught widely, leading both seminars and design studios. He looks forward to returning to UW teaching in Winter and Spring quarters following his fall appointment at Cornell.

Looking ahead, Hutchison is also developing plans for a 2027 Mexico study abroad program, expanding international opportunities for UW architecture students.

The Department of Architecture is proud to celebrate Hutchison’s achievements as he brings UW’s spirit of design excellence and inquiry to an international stage.
